From Bible study guides to devotionals, this list has almost every book that will strengthen your faith and make you a better person. Here are the newly published books that I think every Christian should read.
1. The Bible Study Guide: Know Your Bible Inside and Out – Joel Graham
First on our list of best christian books of 2017 is The Bible Study Guide by Joel Graham. This is a very informative and easy to understand guide. It will serve as a great accompaniment to those who are studying and exploring the Bible, as it includes outlines of the main topics, important biblical dates, and some notable verses that are definitely worth reading. What I also love about this book is that it breaks the main stories down into sentences that everyone can understand. A must read for those who are starting their Christianity journey!
2. Follow the Cloud: Hearing God’s Voice One Next Step at a Time – John Stickl
Follow the Cloud is simply transformative. Pastor John takes familiar passages that we have all read or heard preached many times before and unpacks them in a new and fresh way. It gives us insight into the life that Jesus intended for us to lead along. If you truly desire to lead the life of abundance that God has called His children to then you must read this book!
3. This Is Our Time: Everyday Myths in Light of the Gospel – Trevin Wax
This is a wonderful, challenging read for modern Christians navigating a world that doesn’t share their values. Wax does not hold anything back and may step on your toes a bit as he begins to unfold the everyday myths we encounter day in and day out. I found his discussion on mobile phones to be eye-opening and brilliant, and his explanation of our identity. Regardless of where you are in your walk with Christ, this book is beneficial for Christians wherever they are. The entire book is full of insight and wisdom and is most definitely worth a read!
4. 12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You – Tony Reinke
The way the book is written is close to a work of art. The author unpacks scriptures and directly applies them to the technological monster, which is your mobile phone. It is enjoyable to read and will surely open your eyes to the effects of your smartphone into your daily life. Choices on how we use our phones can affect the course of our lives and can even destroy relationships. Everyone with a smartphone needs to read this as this can surely improve your way of life.
5. Reset: Living a Grace-Paced Life in a Burnout Culture – David Murray
Halfway through our list of best christian books in 2017 is Reset by David Murray. This book was so refreshing and encouraging. Murray offers wise counsel and practical strategy for dealing with our lives of busyness. His transparency will strongly encourage you to reset your dysfunctional behaviors and practices. This is perfect for those who are unsure how to set up healthy breaks and limits. Another winner from David Murray!
6. The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation – Rod Dreher
Dreher has some helpful ideas for preserving healthy Christianity. It’s a provocative book that covers a wealth of different areas for Christians to consider and to be intentional about, including technology, worship, education, and so much more. This book reminds us to stick to the foundations of our faith, to keep God’s Commandments no matter what everyone around us is doing, and to support and connect to the people in our Christian community.
7. Praying Hands: How to Pray the Right Way – Joel Graham
Another one from Joel Graham, Praying Hands shows us the true purpose of prayer. It includes lots of scriptures showing that prayer is necessary. I also love how the information is written in a way that it does not force an opinion on you but does give you solid information that you can take into consideration. I highly recommend this book for those who are having problems praying or even if you don’t!
8. Work and Our Labor in the Lord – James M. Hamilton Jr.
Hamilton takes readers cross a number of genres of Scripture to present an accurate view of work in the Bible. The author shows how work was intended to be at creation, what it was like after the fall, how Christ’s work impacted our work, and finally the restoration of work to its intended appropriateness upon the restoration of man. Not only does the author do well at presenting a view of work that spans all of Scripture, but readers will also appreciate the conciseness with which he conveys the material. This makes applying the content to one’s life easier. Well worth the read.
9. Hope When it Hurts: Biblical Reflections to Help You Grasp God’s Purpose In Your Suffering – Kristen Wetherell, Sarah Walton & Nancy Guthrie
The writing in this book is real and literally every page will surely speak to your heart. All the 30 stand alone chapters will help anyone going through pain or suffering. The way they add scripture to support their points helps bring their points to life for any reader looking for hope. This book would serve as an encouragement, not only for those hurting, but for everyone. Definitely a must read!
10. All in All Journaling Devotional – Sophie Hudson
Last on our list of best christian books of 2017 is All in All Journaling Devotional by Sophie Hudson. Sophie shares her heart through this beautifully written devotional. Hudson uses her experience as a high school teacher and counselor to focus on situations a young woman may face, but the content is relevant for any age. The Bible verses speak to the ideas behind the devotion and correlate well. There are also questions at the end of each of the devotions. Perfect gift for young ladies and women.
